Be Informed, Feel Empowered

Neuromuscular issues can be hard to fully understand because it’s difficult to pinpoint what causes them. While some are inherited or caused by gene mutation, others can be caused by your immune system.

The three types of neuromuscular disorders are:

  • Myopathy: Myopathy can cause pain, weakness and fatigue in your muscles.
  • Neuromuscular junction disorders: Neuromuscular junction disorders can cause fatigue and weakness as they affect the transmission of signals between your muscles and nerves.
  • Neuropathy: Neuropathy, or nerve disorders, can weaken you and cause you to lose feeling in certain areas of your body.
  • ALS Clinic – Affiliated with the ALS Association. Specifically for persons diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
  • CMT Clinic – Specifically for persons diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth.
  • Myasthenia Gravis Clinic – Specifically for persons diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis.
  • MDA Clinic – A multidisciplinary clinic designed for patients who have complex neuromuscular diagnoses and benefit from a multi-team approach to manage symptoms and care.

Neuromuscular disorder symptoms can start in early childhood or later in adulthood. Common symptoms include:

  • Aches and pains
  • Double vision
  • Movement and balance problems
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle loss
  • Muscle weakness
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Sagging eyelids
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Twitching

Our expert team will get to the root of your neuromuscular issue using innovative technology. By finding the exact cause of your pain and discomfort, we can create a treatment plan to heal your condition.

Testing can include:

  • Electromyogram (EMG) or nerve conduction studies: Using electromyography to stimulate certain nerves, our specialists can test how nerves send impulses to your muscles.
  • Genetic testing: Searching for changes in chromosomes, genes or proteins, our genetic counselors can confirm or rule out whether your symptoms are caused by a genetic disorder.
  • Imaging: Using ultrasound or MRI technology, our team will find the cause of your muscle pain or weakness.
  • Nerve biopsy: With this minor procedure, our specialists can remove a small nerve sample for testing and accurate diagnosis.
  • Repetitive nerve and muscle stimulation: Using electrical stimulation on your motor nerves, we can test for neuromuscular junction disorders.

While there’s no cure for neuromuscular disorders, our experts offer a variety of treatment options to lessen your pain and improve your quality of life.
