The Right Care When It Counts

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of a stroke can develop suddenly or over the course of a few hours or days. The signs can vary depending on the type of stroke and its location within your brain. It’s always important to act as quickly as possible if you notice any of the warning signs, including:

  • Loss of Balance or Coordination, Dizziness, or Trouble Walking
  • Numbness or Weakness in the Arms, Legs or Face (Particularly on One Side of the Body)
  • Sudden Confusion, or Trouble Speaking or Understanding
  • Sudden Severe Headache Without a Known Cause
  • Trouble Seeing in One or Both Eyes

Get medical attention right away, even if symptoms disappear.

About 15 percent of strokes are preceded by a mini stroke that lasts only a few minutes. This is called a transient ischemic attack (TIA), and it’s typically a precursor to a major stroke. Don’t hesitate in seeking a medical evaluation — the best thing you can do is call 911.

Responsive Care

When a stroke happens, the response time is key. You need an experienced and highly coordinated team of experts acting quickly and decisively to deliver your care. Our extensive network of stroke specialists throughout Central Florida uses the latest resources, including ambulances equipped with televideo technology, which enables specially trained stroke specialists to help assess and treat stroke patients no matter their location. This technology allows a stroke-specialized neurologist to assess a patient’s condition in 15 minutes or less and to treat the stroke rapidly with a clot-busting medication, called tPA, even if they haven’t yet reached the hospital. We can help minimize the time it takes to start treatment and maximize your chances for recovery.

At AdventHealth, our stroke centers are certified by the Agency for Health Care Administration, American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association, The Joint Commission. All of our facilities across Central Florida are designated as primary stroke centers, and AdventHealth Orlando and Celebration are designated as Comprehensive Stroke Centers. These designations mean stroke patients will receive quality stroke care, close to home.

Rehabilitation

Our comprehensive stroke rehabilitation program is ready to help you recover and regain confidence. We offer both onsite and outpatient services along with the support of a certified and highly skilled team that includes physical, occupational and speech therapists — all dedicated to helping you get back to living your best life.

Together we’ll create a therapy plan designed to help you regain strength and functionality. Your program will focus on areas like:

AdventHealth Celebration and AdventHealth Orlando have received certification from DNV GL Healthcare as Comprehensive Stroke Centers, reflecting the highest level of competence for treatment of serious stroke events.

Prevention Starts With You

With awareness campaigns like B.E. F.A.S.T. we help people know the risks, recognize the signs and get the treatment they need. B.E. F.A.S.T. stands for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech and Time. These are four symptoms to look for when you think someone is having a stroke. If you or someone else experiences one of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

Stroke has several common risk factors, many of which can be avoided through lifestyle changes:

  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Tobacco Use

For women, there are some additional risk factors, including:

  • Atrial Fibrillation
  • Birth Control Pills
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
  • Migraines
  • Preeclampsia
  • Pregnancy

While some risk factors are preventable, others like age, gender and family history are beyond your control. Schedule regular checkups and talk to your doctor about your health care plan. Together, you can spot pre-conditions that might help you act now to prevent a stroke down the road.

Balance - If you notice sudden problems with balance or coordination

Eyes – If you notice sudden blurred or double vision or sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes

Face – If the mouth droops down on one side

Arm – If when both arms are extended, one arm drifts downward

Speech – If speech is slurred, absent or abnormal

Time – If you observe any of these signs, call 911 immediately.
