Understanding Your Condition

Alzheimer’s Disease & Dementia

It can be hard to know if signs of forgetfulness are the result of natural aging or Alzheimer’s disease. If you or someone you love is concerned about progressive memory loss, we want you to know that early detection is key to helping create the most effective treatment plan possible. At the AdventHealth, formerly Florida Hospital, Neuroscience Institute, we’ll support you from diagnosis and beyond through our Maturing Minds Program, a leading initiative with an innovative memory disorders clinic.

There are a number of risk factors for Alzheimer’s, including:

  • Family History
  • Head Trauma
  • High Levels of the Chemical Homocysteine
  • Long-Standing High Blood Pressure

Often, the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease can easily be mistaken for natural aging. However, if you begin to notice memory loss, depression, agitation or violent behavior, it’s important to come in and speak with our medical team. While there isn’t a cure just yet, the right treatment can make all the difference in the world for you and your loved ones.

Dementia

While memory loss is most commonly associated with dementia, it can present itself in other ways, too. Symptoms may include:

  • Becoming Easily Disoriented in Familiar Surroundings
  • Trouble Communicating and Articulating Thoughts
  • Visual Impairment

Though it’s most common later in life, early detection is essential to treating it, since other reversible conditions (such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies) can cause these symptoms as well.

The following treatments may be used to help ease the symptoms of dementia:

  • Behavioral Therapy
  • Family Counseling
  • Medication

At the AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute, find comfort knowing we specialize in helping individuals and their families manage these symptoms on a daily basis. Our Maturing Minds Program offers a dedicated team of a board-certified geriatrician, a licensed clinical social worker and a nurse practitioner to help you schedule time with the right specialists and create a whole-person treatment plan that includes nutrition, medication and exercise. They’ll also connect you with additional resources, recommendations and referrals for ongoing support. We know that sometimes it’s hard to admit that you or someone you love may need a little extra help. But we believe there’s hope in asking for guidance, and our team is ready to support you.

  • Impaired Balance

The symptoms above are known to progress over time. The Parkinson Outreach Center at the AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute is the only one of its kind in the region with a breadth of services and support.

Headache and Migraine

Chronic or uncommonly strong headaches and migraines can affect your life in ways that only someone who’s experienced them can truly understand. According to the National Headache Foundation, an estimated 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches each year. If you happen to be one of them, you’ll find the care and support you need here at the AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute. Our neurologists are experts at helping to identify the cause of your condition and developing the ideal treatment program for you.

There are a few common types of headaches, including:

  • Cluster Headaches — A rare headache disorder that consists of severe headaches on one side of the head; other symptoms include red or teary eyes, runny or stuffy nose, flushing or sweating of the face, or a sense of restlessness and agitation. They’re called cluster headaches because they often occur back to back for days.
  • Migraines — A severe and sometimes debilitating headache that can last between four and 72 hours and is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and an increased sensitivity to light or sound.
  • Tension Headaches — The most common form of headache that almost everyone has had at some point in their life; usually remedied by a quick trip to the pharmacy for over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Support From the Start

You are certainly not alone on this journey. In fact, more than 50 million other Americans will be diagnosed with a neurological disorder of the brain or central nervous system this year, ranging from severe spinal cord injuries and brain tumors to migraine headaches. Have faith that whatever the case may be, there is always support.

There’s no one in the world quite like you. Which is why we look to develop a treatment program for your neurological health that takes more into account than just your diagnosis. We’ll create a care plan that’s personalized according to your medical history, your family’s medical history and a variety of other factors specifically authentic to you.
